My positive birth story

When I became pregnant I was quite nervous after hearing so many black women’s traumatic birth experiences. Since it was during the pandemic, this was heightened since my husband couldn’t attend the initial appointments. I really thank God that I discovered the Five more campaign during my first trimester, which in partnership with the Positive Birth Company, gave me access to a hypnobirth course online. Particularly since the antenatal classes at the hospital were cancelled due to COVID restrictions.

The course really gave me the confidence that my body was made for childbirth and staying calm, cool and collective goes a long way in easing the body.

I remember when my contractions came on labour day, I had so much confidence that I sat watching Love Island while my contractions started without feeling anxious.

At 11pm I went to the hospital, despite the hosptial telling me to stay at home longer (trust your instincts) and I was already 6cm dilated. I shared my birthing plan with the midwives, they found me a bed after an hour in the waiting room and they were fully supportive. 6 hours later and with no complications (other than catching COVID right after), my son arrived with no medication.

I am so grateful to the Five More campaign for helping me discover the course and helping me have a positive birth experience.
