IS YOUR PARTNER PREGNANT? USE THESE FIVE STEPS

Not only do we want to put a stop to the disparities in maternal health, we also want you to be aware of 5 steps that you can take today as a partners that will help support your partner and put an end to these shocking statistics.

1. BE ACTIVE

Keep your partner comfortable and well hydrated. Be present in the moment and be on hand to provide emotional support. Keep your partner positive by encouraging and motivating them.

2. BE HER ADVOCATE

Your partner may not be able to speak for herself so make sure you know what your partner wants and discuss your birth options beforehand. If the health professional intervenes, ask for the reasons why and clearly communicate this to your partner. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and document everything.

3. DO YOUR RESEARCH

Know what to expect during pregnancy, labour and childbirth via trusted sources such as NHS.uk, nice.org.uk and patient.info. We also recommend attending antenatal classes and appointments with your partner wherever possible.

4. BE PREPARED AND FLEXIBLE

You cannot predict how childbirth will be. Prepare for the unexpected, things may not always go to plan so be flexible with your birth options.

5. LOOK AFTER YOURSELF

You cannot pour from an empty cup. To provide emotional support to your partner you need to be in top form. Make sure you have comfortable clothing, pack enough snacks, and water. Childbirth can be long and extremely tiring.
